Investigation underway after Galveston house balcony collapses, killing 'PR Fairy' Susan Farb Morris

A scenic beachfront view turned tragic when a balcony collapsed on Galveston’s West End, leading to the death of a woman hours later. Susan Farb Morris, the owner of the home on Kahala Drive East, was on the balcony when it suddenly gave way on Friday.

Morris, affectionately known as the “PR Fairy,” was beloved for her efforts in promoting the community. Her family recalls her embracing this title and spreading her unique brand of magic.

The incident has raised many questions. According to Galveston officials, two people, including Morris, were injured when the balcony collapsed on Friday afternoon. Witnesses initially reported that Morris’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Emergency responders quickly arrived, and Morris was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, the medical examiner later confirmed that she died from blunt force trauma resulting from the fall. Despite the significant damage to the home, an investigation was not immediately initiated.

It wasn’t until firefighters were informed of Morris’s death on Monday that the city decided to launch an investigation. City officials informed ABC13 that building inspectors would visit the property on Tuesday morning.

Records indicate that inspectors had not been to the property in over 15 years. The last recorded work on the house was in 2008, following damage from Hurricane Ike. Inspectors are expected to examine the balcony for any damage and to determine if any recent repairs had been conducted.

Morris’s unexpected death has led to an outpouring of support on social media, with nearly 1,000 comments following her family’s announcement. On Monday, loved ones gathered to bid farewell at her funeral.
