ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KFMB) – A Southern California community is grieving the loss of an Army veteran.
Kerry Sheron died Sunday night, days after he was brutally attacked outside his home near East Mission Avenue in Escondido.
The 69-year-old had been in critical condition since the assault May 20, Escondido police said.
On Memorial Day, several veterans displayed their American flags in remembrance of Sheron.
Sheron was known for his political yard display and support for President Donald Trump.
Sheron’s wife believes their lawn decorations played a role in the unprovoked attack.
The motive remains under investigation, but police arrested Thomas Butler after the attack.
During Butler’s arraignment, prosecutors said that he also attacked a witness who tried to intervene.
Butler, a 32-year-old Navy veteran, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and several other initial charges.
Butler is being held without bail, according to San Diego County Jail records.
