WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Gov. Laura Kelly toured the South Central Regional Mental Health Hospital on Tuesday, a new mental health facility with a 104-bed capacity.
The hospital broke ground a little over a year ago. The outer work appears to be finished, though work inside the facility continues. Once finished the hospital will serve Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley, Harvey, and Sumner counties.
Sedgwick County Commissioners Ryan Baty and Jim Howell also toured the facility.
During her opening remarks, Kelly said the hospital will help reduce the burden on local law enforcement.
“The benefits will extend far beyond the walls of this facility,” Kelly said. “Jails and emergency rooms will see fewer people who should never have been there. Law enforcement will be able to partner with mental health professionals to provide the intervention treatment required in so many situations.”
The mental health hospital will start accepting patients in January 2027. Kelly said she will be proud to see the facility open its doors before she leaves office.
